Statement on the Conflict Ukraine

March 30, 2022

The events that have been unfolding in Ukraine have been difficult to watch. Each day we see more heartbreaking news from Ukraine, most tragically the loss of innocent lives and the displacement of millions of Ukrainians.

We stand in direct opposition of the war against Ukraine, and we stand in solidarity with all who have been affected. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the people impacted.

While our programs in Europe have not been directly impacted, students, staff, and faculty are always our number one priority. We continue to watch this and all global developments that have any potential impact on our programs.

We know that studying abroad has a profound impact on the connectedness of our world. We hope you’ll join us in donating to the IIE Emergency Student Fund, or in supporting refugees from Ukraine and around the globe.

Evolution of CAPA & CEA's Partnership

March 21, 2022

We are excited to share new announcements about the future of CAPA and our partnership with CEA.

In just the first year of our partnership, we have expanded our global footprint and our portfolio of programs. We have worked together in meaningful ways to share best practices and expertise across organizations, improving and expanding our programming at our Study Centers around the world while delivering the highest quality education abroad programs that serve the needs of our students and you, our partners.

As we move forward together, we will now exist as one single organization with CAPA and CEA as distinct education abroad providers.

The first step in this exciting new chapter is welcoming Keith Cline as CEO of our combined organization, effective March 14. Keith joined the Board of Directors of CEA and CAPA in December 2021. With a wealth of business and leadership knowledge, Keith is eager to combine his passion for leading people and the development of globally minded students.

Additionally, Dr. Martha Johnson will join the organization as the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost later this spring. Dr. Martha Johnson is an expert and leader in the field of education abroad and her tenure at the University of Minnesota, in addition to her research and advocacy in our field, makes her poised to step into this integral role.

I will remain the President of CAPA reporting directly to Keith, and I look forward to continuing to work with you and the CAPA and CEA global teams on our shared future.

We are excited about what this means for the future of study abroad, the greater impact our organization will have on tens of thousands of students, and our continued dedication to our partners.

CAPA Receives QAA Standards Renewal

CAPA: The Global Education Network has successfully completed a four-year review by the QAA in London, recognizing CAPA’s academic quality.

July 28, 2021

CAPA: The Global Education Network is pleased to announce that they have been recognized by The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) for meeting or exceeding expectations for quality and standards in the CAPA London Center in a July 2021 report.

The QAA ensures that standards for the quality of UK higher education are met or exceeded, with the goal of improving the quality of education that students receive. While the QAA only reviews programs in the UK, the academic approach that CAPA takes in the UK is the same approach they take at all their program centers worldwide—a methodology which combines best practices from higher education systems in the UK and the US. Students can be certain of receiving the same quality of education with a curricular, co-curricular, and extracurricular approach to teaching and learning no matter where they choose to study abroad with CAPA.

After conducting a full review of CAPA’s programs in London, the QAA committee highlighted the following areas of good practice:

  • The systematic and strategic approach to peer review of teaching, which contributes to the quality of student learning
  • Faculty and staff development, which are carefully planned and appropriately supported, and which encourage the integration of research into teaching
  • The approach to assessment, which seamlessly integrates relevant aspects of US and UK approaches to higher education, and
  • The approach to student academic and personal support, which is holistic in design and delivery, and valued by its recipients.

CAPA is honored to be recognized in their commitment to providing exceptional quality education abroad programs for students in the UK.

CAPA would like to thank the QAA, staff, university partners, and their international education colleagues for holding CAPA and the field to the highest quality standards for US students in the UK.

The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education is the independent body that checks on standards and quality in UK higher education. It conducts quality assessment reviews, develops reference points and guidance for providers, and conducts or commissions research on relevant issues.

For more than four decades, CAPA: The Global Education Network has worked with higher education institutions to build programs that meet their goals for learning abroad. CAPA operates education centers in Global Cities and has developed distinct academic offerings, support frameworks, and oversight structures for students and visiting faculty. CAPA has been providing internship experiences in Global Cities for undergraduate students for more than 25 years.

CAPA Receives QUIP Standards Renewal

CAPA: The Global Education Network has received The Forum on Education Abroad QUIP standards renewal for all CAPA programs globally.

July 21, 2021

CAPA: The Global Education Network is pleased to announce that they have been recognized by The Forum on Education Abroad for meeting The Forum Standards of Good Practice for Education Abroad in the 2021 Forum QUIP.

The Forum QUIP Review Panel noted that CAPA “maintains a commitment and dedication to offering high-quality programs … at a level of excellence acceptable to the larger academic community.” In addition, the reviewers were “particularly impressed by the organization’s academic design, student-centeredness, and COVID response.”

“The successful completion of QUIP also reflects the organization’s commitment to continuous assessment and improvement … Congratulations again on CAPA achieving this significant recognition,” said Melissa Torres, President and CEO of The Forum on Education Abroad.

The QUIP review involved a rigorous process in which CAPA provided The Forum with a Self-Study Report, which was reviewed by independent Peer Reviewers. Then, the Peer Reviewers met virtually with various members of CAPA’s Leadership Team and other staff members to learn and pose questions about CAPA’s approach to academics, student support, DEI initiatives, marketing, and more. Finally, they issued a report containing meaningful, constructive suggestions for CAPA to further improve their programming.

CAPA is honored to be recognized in their commitment to providing exceptional quality education abroad programs for US students. However, they also acknowledge their responsibility to continue conducting internal reviews and to identify areas for improvement and innovation.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, CAPA has demonstrated their ability to pivot and innovate to continue supporting students, even when international travel was not an option. In March 2020, CAPA quickly launched remote learning to allow spring 2020 students to complete their courses and global internships from home. CAPA launched Online Study Abroad and Remote Global Internships for summer 2020 shortly thereafter, with hundreds of college students taking part in these programs over the summer.

CAPA is pleased to have been able to provide opportunities for students to gain valuable skills and competencies, while increasing students’ global awareness and preparing them for life in an interconnected global work environment.

In the future, CAPA will maintain their commitment to providing the highest quality academic programs, innovating in the field, providing a safe and positive learning environment for students, increasing access in education abroad, and advancing practices that support diverse communities.

CAPA would like to thank the Forum on Education Abroad, staff, university partners, and their international education colleagues for holding CAPA and the field to the highest quality standards for US students abroad.

The Forum on Education Abroad is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission as the Standards Development Organization for Education Abroad.

Statement on Anti-Asian racism

Updated March 19, 2021

The United States continues to experience a rise in anti-Asian racism and violence, culminating in the race motived murders in Atlanta. Anti-Asian racism and violence is unacceptable. CAPA actively condemns and is outraged by the racist violence and bigoted treatment of members of the Asian and Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) community.

Justice, equity, diversity, and inclusivity (JEDI) is paramount to the work of CAPA. Addressing racial justice and deconstructing bias in our organization and beyond continues to be a core focus of our work. We recognize that this work is ongoing, and CAPA is committed to advancing anti-racist policies and structures in our staffing, academics, faculty engagement, student services, program delivery, and all other facets of our work.

We stand in solidarity with Asian and AANHPI communities and ask you to take action and speak out against anti-Asian violence and white supremacy.

CAPA is continually committed to using diversity, equity, and inclusion as a lens in all aspects of our work. We are dedicated to advancing practices that are anti-racist and are supportive of diverse communities, including the vast array of diverse and rich communities of our staff and students. We condemn racism and are actively engaged in dismantling structural bias within our organization and supporting similar initiatives with our partners and within the international education field. We also recognize that this work is ongoing and always evolving, and we continually seek ways to improve and deepen our efforts.

Providing a safe and positive learning environment for our students is of the highest importance to us. We stand resolute in our commitment to creating an environment where students can focus on their development, learning, and growth. CAPA does not tolerate racism, bias, microaggressions, or othering on our programs, and conducts mandatory diversity and inclusion trainings with our students as part of the orientation programming. Please see our orientation video for more information.

Broadening access to education abroad programs and amplifying the voices of students from traditionally underserved populations is a long term and ongoing priority for CAPA, and our partnerships and scholarships. These focuses include longstanding partnerships with MSIs and community colleges, as well as HBCU-targeted scholarships, Diversity Advocacy Scholars grant program, symposia and webinars related to JEDI-focused topics, and the Occasional Publication series to name a few.

CAPA conducts trainings per year for its staff members on diversity, equity, and inclusion, with topics that range from supporting diverse students to unconscious bias training and include engaging outside experts in the field of equity and inclusion. In our overseas centers, we provide regular training on how to respond to issues of racism and bias, as well as all student health, safety, and wellness needs.

Additionally, we take a proactive approach to our internal anti-racist work. We have a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee and Marketing and Communications Working Group, and senior leadership DEI working group that actively develop and incorporate anti-racist policies and practices into our organization and materials. Diversity is also part of CAPA’s student learning outcomes and is incorporated into our curriculum, including our courses and My Global City events calendar.

We partner with Diversity Abroad and we were honored to be recognized by them as the recipient of their Excellence in Diversity & Inclusion in International Education award in 2020. Through this and other partnerships, we offer resources for students from diverse identities and have a student portal that provides additional resources pre-departure and in-country for students of color, LBGTQIA+ students, and other students from diverse backgrounds.

As an organization, broadening access and inclusivity is a core part of our work, and to this end, we invest in Diversity Abroad and their Innovation Grant, The Fund for Education Abroad, LEAD 50/50, the HBCU Symposia, The Global Leadership League, and several DEI organizations, to amplify our DEI work, and also to continuously learn more about the best ways to evolve our internal initiatives.
For more information on our efforts, please check out the following pages on our website:

We recognize that diversity, equity, and inclusion work is ongoing, and we continuously assess the impact of our JEDI policies and initiatives to improve and incorporate recognized best practices. We are continually learning, and our commitment is to incorporate what we learn into educating our students, and ourselves. We encourage you to continue to follow along as we share more information about CAPA’s JEDI work.

CAPA: The Global Education Network is pleased to announce the successful completion of its inaugural online study abroad and internship programs. While the COVID-19 pandemic kept students from studying and interning abroad in person this summer, CAPA’s remote global internships and online study abroad courses gave students the opportunity for meaningful global experiences from home.

Hundreds of college students from around the country took part in CAPA programs this summer and reported overwhelmingly that they gained valuable professional and personal skills through their experience. "This opportunity allowed me to continue growing professionally and personally even during these complicated times,” said Valeria Valdes, an Arizona State University student and summer 2020 CAPA Remote Global Internship participant.

The success of the summer’s program has led CAPA to continue to offer remote global internships and online courses each term, with the first fall cohort starting today. The remote global internship program will continue to offer a robust professional and cultural experience for students who haven’t been able to consider in person international experiences in the past due to financial constraints and other barriers.

As companies around the world have moved to working remotely, CAPA’s online programs enable students to gain valuable skills while earning credit.

CAPA’s vast network of thousands of companies and organizations around the world enabled students to intern in their chosen field, from marketing and communications to healthcare and accounting. Upon acceptance into the program, CAPA’s internship team matched each student with a guaranteed placement customized to meet students’ personal and professional goals. Students were placed with organizations in global cities worldwide including Barcelona, Dublin, Florence, London, Shanghai, and Sydney. In addition to the internship, students received ongoing support, mentoring, resume and interview preparation training, special guest lectures, and networking opportunities. Plus, students engaged with the global cities they were working and studying in online through CAPA’s My Global City virtual events, which included virtual city tours, global trivia games, Italian cooking classes, and networking events.

“CAPA’s focus on professional skills such as remote collaboration, communication and time management provide students with the skills needed to be successful in a global online working environment. These opportunities are having a pivotal role in the shifting landscape of higher education in the U.S. and beyond as companies depend on a global workforce that is adept at working remotely,” said CAPA VP of Internships Craig Kench.

A Message from CAPA On our Commitment to Anti-racism

August 20, 2020

CAPA is committed to using diversity, equity, and inclusion as a lens in all aspects of our work. We are dedicated to advancing practices that are anti-racist and are supportive of diverse communities, including the vast array of diverse and rich communities of our staff and students including BIPOC, AANHPI, Latinx, LGBTQIA+, and others. We condemn racism and are actively engaged in dismantling structural bias within our organization and supporting similar initiatives with our partners and within the international education field.

Providing a safe and positive learning environment for our students is of the highest importance to us. We stand resolute in our commitment to creating an environment where students can focus on their development, learning, and growth. CAPA does not tolerate racism, bias, microaggressions, or othering on our programs. We take all allegations among our students and staff very seriously. We thoroughly investigate and act accordingly to address each situation appropriately with care, concern, and compassion.

The murder of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and so many others, and subsequent global protests highlighted the ever-present, sustained, and continued inequity for communities of color. The racist and bigoted treatment of members of the AANHPI community related to the COVID-19 pandemic have demonstrated that DEI work remains of paramount importance and addressing racial justice and white privilege continue to be a priority for CAPA.

CAPA conducts multiple in-person trainings per year for its staff members on diversity, equity, and inclusion, with topics that range from supporting diverse students to unconscious bias training and include engaging outside experts in the field of equity and inclusion. In our overseas centers, we provide regular training on how to respond to issues of racism and bias, as well as all student health, safety, and wellness needs.

Additionally, we take a proactive approach to our internal anti-racist work. We have a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee and Marketing and Communications Working Group that work actively to develop and incorporate anti-racist policies and practices into our organization and materials. Diversity is also part of CAPA’s student learning outcomes and is incorporated into our curriculum, including our courses and My Global City events calendar.

We partner with Diversity Abroad to offer resources for students from diverse identities and have a student portal that provides additional resources pre-departure and in-country for students of color, LBGTQIA+ students, and other students from diverse backgrounds. We invest in Diversity Abroad and their Innovation Grant, The Fund for Education Abroad, LEAD 50/50, the HBCU Symposia, The Global Leadership League, as well as multiple DEI organizations, to amplify our DEI work, and also to continuously learn about more about the best ways to evolve our internal initiatives.

For more information on our efforts, please check out the following pages on our website:

We recognize that diversity, equity, and inclusion work is ongoing, and we continuously assess the impact of our DEI policies and initiatives to improve and incorporate recognized best practices.  We are continually learning, and our commitment is to incorporate what we learn into educating our students on these issues to help them grow and challenge their perceptions.

A Message from IEOs

August 10, 2020

Dear Colleagues,

We hope that you all are keeping well and are finding clarity as you build plans on your campus for the upcoming fall semester. We know that every aspect of higher education has been affected by the ongoing pandemic, and the International Education field has seen a wide array of special challenges over the last 5 months, from returning U.S. students safely home in the spring, to uncertainty of border and visa restrictions this fall for both incoming and outgoing international students. As international education organizations, we are adapting to these changes and innovating solutions to support you and your students.

While the nature of instruction and student interaction may have shifted for the time being, our commitment to you remains our top priority. We are driven and focused on collaborating, sharing information, and engaging in meaningful discussions about what international education will look like moving forward.

Together, international education organizations are uniting to discuss best practices, policies, and procedures in health, safety, and responsible program operations. We are evaluating information from The Forum on Education Abroad, NAFSA, foreign Ministries of Health, OSAC, the CDC, US Department of State, and others to ensure that we fully understand the intricacies of the data and recommendations from these experts, and can contextualize them locally, regionally, and country-wide as we look to the future of on-site programming.

Together, we all want the best for your students and will continue to work with each of our partners abroad to negotiate more flexible policies that benefit your students' academic, professional, and personal goals.

Together, we have gone through these difficult months with you. We are here to help you as you face these same questions and navigate these new challenges. We encourage you to engage with your approved partners about ways in which they can support your office and your students to further the mission of global education.

Together, we look forward to continuing to work with you on the new virtual study abroad fair software being designed, scheduling calls to discuss reopening plans, and encouraging students to apply for a new or renewed passport as soon as possible due to processing delays at passport agencies.

We miss all of you dearly and look forward to the day when we can again visit your campus, speak with your students, and help them find their place and purpose abroad that will change their lives forever.
